My Students

Engaging young children everyday in an elementary classroom is no easy task! As my students are grasping blending sounds together, they are ready to read independently. My challenge is to offer interesting and fun choices for them as they practice their newly developed reading skills!

My school is a small city system in east central Alabama.

We serve approximately seven hundred students at my kindergarten through sixth grade school. We are a Title One school with more than fifty percent of our students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. We serve children from high poverty areas. My classroom is one of six kindergarten classrooms. Our students enter kindergarten at all levels of readiness, making differentiating lessons very important. Our students are curious and delightful! They love learning with technology.

My Project

My students will use the Kindle readers in several ways. First, they will partner read assigned phonics texts that strengthen both phonics and comprehension skills. Next, they will choose texts to read that will include both fiction and non-fiction. The readers will also be used for differentiation. Students who need more challenging reading assignments can use the readers at their level. My plans are to also connect the majority of reading experiences with writing, increasing comprehension of the story. The readers will be one choice among others, including tablets and children's books.

We are in the twenty-first century!

How else can today's students be prepared for tomorrow's world if they do not learn to think critically, solve problems and use technology? Education in its purest form is designed to prepare the next generation for bringing more good into the world. The addition of these Kindle readers will offer my students a brand new experience with reading practice that they do not currently have. I'm excited about the possibilities!
