My Students

My students are a diverse group of 7th graders who love learning about science. Several of them have learning challenges, but this does not stop them from doing their very best to achieve! Even when they struggle and get discouraged, they always try to put forth their best effort to learn about life science. They do especially well with technology-based lessons and activities that involve hands-on interaction.

The best activities for my students allow them to get immediate feedback of their results.

Technology-based quizzing platforms such as Socrative or Kahoot! are very popular with my students, and they love web-based interactive activities and simulations. These activities allow students to see what they already know and what they still need to study. Even more important, they allow me to view their results in real time and target my instruction to meet their individual needs.

Our classroom does not have a computer for student use, and there are few technology resources in our school. We are a Title One school and most of our school technology is targeted to specific classes and activities. I am seeking hand held devices that my students can use in my science class on a daily basis.

My Project

I have chosen these Kindle Fire 7" tablets to get us started with our classroom technology integration. With these tablets, we will be able to access Internet-based programs such as Kahoot! and Socrative so that my students can get instant feedback on their quiz results. This tablet also has a built-in camera with video function so that we can use augmented and virtual reality apps, such as anatomy 4D, which allows students to to view human anatomy interactively.

There are so many technology-based life science apps and websites, and these tablets will allow my students to access interactive technology every day.

Kindle tablets will also allow my students to research answers to their own questions. Twenty-first century students must become computer literate if they are to have future success. Having technology available for my students every day will help them to become lifelong learners and enhance their science content knowledge.

Several of my students have special needs and have great difficulty retaining information. Immediate feedback is especially effective to help reinforce their learning. I hope to increase technology-based learning activities and provide more in-depth and interactive activities so that I can support my students' learning and make it easier for them to retain information.
