My Students

There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all. –Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis My students are discovering a vast world through their books. Daily reading is a part of our class. My students are voracious readers and demand a wide variety of titles.

My students are becoming excellent readers and are eager to dive into the world of literature.

My students are not just interested in getting by, they aim to excel. The Kindle e-Readers will give them access to new horizons. They are excited about reading and readily use technology when they have access to it. They get fired-up about education when they have the opportunity to engage in hands-on thought-provoking activities. Given the right environment and support from their teachers, they are capable of high-level inquiry. Our school provides many opportunities for these students to engage in projects that will lead to independent thinking. But these children are ready for more. They will greatly benefit from having a high-interest e-reader loaded with the tools to supercharge their reading scholarship. This will advance their literacy circle discussions and help them develop analytic skills coupled with the latest technology.

My Project

The goal of this literacy grant is to improve students' ability to analyze and interpret text by using Kindle ebook readers to practice important reading comprehension strategies like highlighting text, writing margin notes, clipping text, and learning 3rd level vocabulary words--strategies to improve higher level thinking like inference, cause and effect, and making connections to 'big ideas.' These reading strategies can be difficult for teachers to teach and students to learn using traditional paper books which students are not able to mark up resulting in little practice of these skills. Kindle ebook readers with built-in dictionaries and QWERTY keyboards allow students to digitally write in the margins, highlight text, clip text, enlarge font size to improve readability, and instantly and easily look up definitions without interrupting reading. In addition, Kindles have the potential to improve reading fluency with their text-to-speech capability.

My students will enjoy a greater range of reading choices in a small compact size that will free up their desk from clutter.

They will see themselves as part of the community of modern learners who have learned to incorporate technology in their education. Through the virtue of habitual use of these Kindles, my students will understand that high-tech is not only for gaming but it is also a doorway to great thoughts and an effective tool for reading. Please help me empower my students!
