My Students

I teach English as a New Language in Brooklyn, NY. My students come from many different backgrounds and cultures. I have students from Haiti, Yemen, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and Bangladesh. This eclectic crew makes up approximately 1/5 of the entire student population of our school. In my opinion, my English Language Learners are the most hardworking, respectful, and positive scholars in the school. They truly want to learn, which makes my job that much easier and enjoyable. I'm here on DonorsChoose.org to go to bat for them. They deserve the best.

My Project

The computers in my school are dinosaurs. Extinct. That's why I'm here. I need tablets (Amazon Kindle Fire was the cheapest option) so that my newcomers can work on their English even when I'm not there. There are currently 10 English language learners in grades 3-5 who are complete beginners. They just arrived in our country this year, and are trying to keep up. I see them twice a day, four days a week, but I'd like them to take advantage of the program we've purchased, Rosetta Stone, for at least 20 minutes per day. There are also approximately 15 other ELLs who arrived last year who still need to work on their basic communication skills. Rosetta Stone is a very popular language learning program. This particular program is for K-12 students. The program will no longer load on the computers at the school. The computers are completely useless. These ELLs can also use Google Translate on the tablets, allowing them to translate thoughts, as well as written text, instantly.
