Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are the English Language Learner magnet school for our district. Our school has approximately a 65% ELL population. Many of our students have just left their home country and are coming to the US for the first time. Also, our school is a Title 1 school where over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to the family's low socioeconomic status.
The students we teach need a lot of assistance with becoming fluent readers.
As the school librarian, I play a key role in fostering this in every student in my school and to support my colleagues in the same endeavor. I strive to close the achievement gap and develop a love of reading in each and every one of our students. The Kindles will better equip us to differentiate learning for our students and to engage them more thoroughly in their own learning.
My Project
The flexibility the Kindle offers is what makes it a fantastic learning tool. Having the Kindles in the School Library will allow students to move about the library and work independently or collaborate with others. Many students sit for a long time in class. I don't want them to have to do that in the library too. Using the Kindle will allow them to move around, get their wiggles out, collaborate, and learn.
Children are always excited to learn something new especially when the word tablet is mentioned.
Tell them they can work with a partner and that excitement exponentially increases. Tell them they can also move around and pick their own spot and they are through the roof!
The Kindles provided through your donations will help foster a growth and appreciation in literacy, develop collaboration skills crucial to learning, and promote creativity. Our school library is used all day long by the librarian and classroom teachers and their students. Classroom teachers will also be able to use the Kindles for group work, basic skills instruction, and targeted learning. We have many technology programs students are required to use on a daily and weekly basis. Having enough working materials can be a problem. The Kindles assist in having more students learning at the same time.
