My Students

When you start a good book don't you want to share it with friends? Do you ever write notes in the margins or need to find the meaning of a word? Sitting around with friends in a discussion where more information is needed, how many times does someone pull out their phone to google it?

Our class is populated with students who are living at or below the poverty level.

Many have moved multiple times in their elementary career and most don't have access to many resources at home. At the start of the year, many of us are below the grade level expectations and find ourselves working extra hard to find materials on our level and to improve our literacy skills. Still, we show up to school thirsting for knowledge and community.

My Project

When you walk into my classroom, you find books everywhere: on shelves, in crates, and stored in boxes under tables. Keeping them organized, leveled, and fresh is a huge job. Imagine how much more efficient this process could be with a Kindle. Especially with students who are significantly above or below grade level, putting hands on just the right book is hard. Now, if I see someone's hooked on Roald Dahl, I can download another book on the spot! They are also able to summarize, ask questions in the notes, and find the meaning to unknown words all on one device. So simple! When we start exploring a new topic, I like to have students work together to brainstorm questions they may have and explore to see what they can learn. A portable device, like these Kindles, will provide more access to students and allow them to work in the floor like so many of them enjoy. No longer will a child have to wait until their classmate finishes their session on the computers when they have a question.

Increased accessibility to modern devices, and the literacy skills they provide, is critical to my students' growth.

Sharing observations and books on these Kindles, and allowing them to grab a device and look something up is just what is needed to live in today's world.
