I am a Kindergarten teacher for P.S. 133 in Brooklyn, NY. Teaching Kindergarten and ensuring that the students in my care get the best education has been my passion. Kindergarten is one of the few grades in which learning can be fun and exciting. I teach in an inclusive setting containing a population of kindergarteners with a variety of learning abilities. For this reason, it is imperative that I create lessons that are fun, yet are within the state mandated standards. Cooking and learning with food is one way I can engage my students and connect seemingly complex concepts to their personal lives. Here are some of the activities in which we were able to incorporate food with learning: ? Patterns - We make Patterned Cakes. Each student is given cake batter, which is dyed using different colored food coloring, then placed into the cake pan creating various patterned layers (e.g., blue, red, blue, red?.) ? Fractions - We bake and cut real pizzas into halves, thirds, fourths? ? We read the book, Green Eggs and Ham, and then we make actual green eggs as an activity. ? Shapes - We mold cookie dough into different shapes, bake it, and then eat it. ? Measurement ? We measure the ingredients and bake bread Unfortunately, due to laws that govern school cafeteria kitchens, we are no longer allowed to use the school's kitchen facilities for our classroom activities. The activities as stated above will no longer take place for this year's students, unless donors like you provide our classroom with: ? Small oven ? Kitchen accessories ? utensils, pans, child sized aprons, hats Kindergarten sets forth the foundation of our children's formal education and should be taken extremely seriously. I firmly believe that if children begin their school career in a place where learning is enjoyable, yet productive, this establishes a positive trend for the rest of their school career. Donors like you can restore these joyful experiences in kindergarten, by choosing to donate.
