Kindergarteners Explore the World

My students need an inviting science corner with hands-on tools such as prisms, magnifiers, and objects to move and measure, with a comfortable rug on which to work.

My Students

My students love science! I am delighted that they do, and so lucky to have a well-lit, airy corner of my classroom dedicated to science. However, my materials are now 20 years old, and many are broken or missing pieces. I want to provide an inviting, high-quality science corner for my children.

My school is an urban school in San Francisco.

We are the most integrated school in the City, racially, ethnically, and linguistically. My students range from middle class (a few) to poverty/recent immigrant. I also have special education (Down's Syndrome and developmentally delayed)students in my class, who participate with their peers using speech computers and adapted materials (especially sturdy items which can be "mouthed" without harming the child). My youngest student just turned 5 in early December; my oldest will be 6 before January 1. This mix of students is very typical of my class from year to year.

My Project

My science corner needs to have its worn-out rug replaced so that it is safe and sanitary for children to work on experiments at floor level. The solid color will minimize distractions and help them avoid limiting themselves to a small area when setting-up block ramps, marble runs, dominoes, and similar experiments. I'm planning to place it in a bay window (see my classroom picture), so there will be wonderful natural light and air circulation. The new balance scale will be easy and safe for them to operate as they weigh and compare shells, rocks, and other specimens we find. With the light in the classroom, the prisms, color paddles, and magnifiers will be wonderful for exploration of light and color, and I have had special training from the San Francisco Exploratorium in how to use these materials. The globe will help us identify where in the world the elements and items we study in science can be found, and help the students look beyond the classroom.

I know many projects are submitted by new teachers, and rightfully so.

I am asking for your support as a longtime teacher who has successfully taught with, and worn out, a variety of practical, child-friendly materials. For so many children today, whose time is spent interfacing with a screen, discovering the world "up close and hands on" is a vital experience that schools can provide, opening the real world to them in a way that invites questions and exploration. Thank you for your help.
