Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine 25 kindergarten students joyously singing to celebrate the start of a new day. I get to begin each morning to the sound of their little voices, and they bring this energy with them throughout the course of the day as they learn to become proficient in both Spanish and English through our dual language program. We are an Expeditionary Learning school that leads students through the inquiry process to become experts in their science studies!

I teach kindergarten at a progressive dual language school in Washington Heights, New York.

Washington Heights is a primarily Dominican neighborhood where many of my students are immigrants and speak Spanish at home. I have an integrated classroom, meaning that 25-40% of my students have special needs. Despite the various needs of my students, each child is supported to take ownership of their learning and achieve their goals. I believe that it is my job to empower young learners to become change-makers who advocate for themselves and others. My students are incredibly curious and eager to learn!

My Project

In January my students will be launching a unit of study all about their identities! They will be asking big questions about race, gender, country of origin and much much more. We need more books to support these conversations to be productive and positive.

My goal is to name and celebrate our similarities and differences.

My students are special because they come from many different backgrounds. Even our youngest learners begin to ask questions about why we look or sound different. Instead of shutting down these conversations, I want to embrace them. By de-mystifying our differences we can learn how to appreciate them and learn even more about our similarities!
