My Students

Imagine that you are a five year old kindergartner who has never had a writing experience before. Would you be more excited about writing on a sheaf of paper that has been stapled together or a glossy journal dedicated to your important writing and ideas?

My inner-city, predominately immigrant ESL kindergarten students often hold pencils and crayons for the very first time when they arrive in my classroom.

Since the state standards require them to write sentences by the end of the year, there is much work to be done. One of the most significant challenges in achieving this goal is motivating my students to write.

My Project

Throughout the week, each of the 66 kindergartners enrolled at our school rotates through my classroom to receive focused academic instruction. In the past, I have spent countless hours stapling journals for each of them--time which could be much better spent on a myriad of other tasks. Imagine my delight when I discovered these lovely 48 page journals for 69 cents each!

You can make our daily writing practice an exciting, motivating experience by providing an entire year's worth of these age appropriate journals for each kindergartner that visits my classroom.

Please help my students develop a sense that their writing is both important and valuable!
