My Students

"I've found that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior." - Kayla Delzer. My goal is to reconstruct my classroom to allow for these kind of opportunities.

My school is part of one of the largest school districts in Southern California, and is one which does not receive additional funding such as Title I funds but has similar needs to such schools.

We are provided basic furniture (tables, chairs) but much current research points to the advantages of flexible seating. Funds are not available to stay true to recent findings. Any additional seating options in my classroom have been funded by myself or parent donations.

My students range in age between 5 - 7 years old. While some have had exposure to school experiences through preschool and Transitional Kindergarten, many have not. Regardless, they are all, simply because of their age, WIGGLY! Their limited attention spans will greatly benefit from flexible seating!

My Project

Approximately a year ago, I experimented with a new classroom layout. I moved all my tables aside which opened up a second LARGE open area in my classroom in addition to the traditional "rug" area which I used for large group instruction. This shift not only provided access to the television that I use to instruct from, but also opened up a TON of extra learning space for my students. I found many students gravitating to this area to work independently and started to realize that the six pillows I have were simply not enough! My students need more than the basic tables and chairs that the school district provides. Funding of this project will take my learning environment to the next level!

My students have very clearly "told" me by their behaviors in this new open space that they enjoy the seating freedom and the opportunity to move their bodies while they are work.

Balance balls, wobble chairs and wobble cushions will be available to students who wish to sit at tables, bath mats will allow students to lay comfortably on the floor, and bean bags will allow students to sit comfortably without the constriction of a table. These new tools will bring my learning environment to life!
