My Students

I teach Kindergarten at a charter academy in West Michigan. My scholars are brand-new to school, and are beginning their academic careers at a time when unprecedented changes are happening daily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the school experience is new for them, they are learning to navigate new and innovative ways of learning as our whole school returns to in-person learning. They are curious, flexible, eager learners, and I am so excited to spend the year with them!

My Project

My kindergartners are just beginning their academic careers, and it is important that we set the foundations that will ensure success in later grades. As a whole school, we have returned to in-person learning, and for most of my scholars, this is the first time they have ever been in a school building. As we develop plans for keeping safe this year, we are cognizant of the fact that scholars may need to have individual sets of materials, and that we will need to more frequently clean and sanitize our common spaces.

As we navigate COVID-19, we are getting creative with the many ways we deliver instruction, and how students use our instructional space.

This may include lessons at our small-group instruction table, our rug, or even outside on the lawn on a nice day! All of these changes are intended to help us keep socially distanced and safe. In addition, we are cleaning and sanitizing our common spaces, such as tables, rugs, supplies, doorknobs, and water fountains multiple times every day.

Because we are back to in-person instruction, all scholars and staff are wearing face masks during the school day. Occasionally, one of my kindergartners will forget theirs, or they will become wet or damaged during the day. With this project, I would like to stock my classroom with a couple of boxes of disposable masks so that we can easily supply one in these situations.

The disinfectant wipes and spray will help us continue to be able to clean commonly-touched surfaces each day. The tissues and sanitizer will likewise be used to keep our classroom and scholars germ-free and healthy.
