This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember a time when kindergarten was fun? Do you remember hen it was a thrill to know you would be working with scissors, and glue, and decorations for your project? We are living in a time where young children are missing out on cutting, pasting, and printing out drawings because of a lack of materials.

My students live in a low income community.

Our school is made up of almost 100% Latino students with almost 100% of them qualifying for free lunch. Like most children, they like to have fun and like being in a school that supports a higher level of thinking.

My Project

Our kindergarten students are bombarded with all kinds of assessments. We are timing them on their reading of letter sounds and words. We test them on math skills, word proficiency, and other standardized tests. There is too much drilling and not enough encouragement of creative thinking. My students need hands on art materials to make crafts, such as puppets with many types of decorations, and media that will capture their imagination. I have requested paints, paper and crafts so that my students can make these puppets.

My project is important because we need to teach students at a young age that they themselves can be creative.

That sometimes there is no right or wrong answer. Whatever they create in a drawing or art project is their own personal creation. The bottom line is, we should be in the business of nurturing creative, positive thinking and not automated robots.
