Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"There's no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading, and kids who are reading the wrong books." -James Patterson. My students have yet to come across the "wrong" books. They will be thrilled to see so many books on such an exciting theme!

I teach 13 creative kindergarten students at a low-income school, that do not experience much outside of the city.

It is up to me to teach them about the world outside of what they already know. They are excited about learning through reading fiction and non-fiction texts, and through projects that stimulate their minds. My students love helping and collaborating with one another to accomplish the tasks at hand.

My Project

As a new teacher, I am ecstatic that I am able to teach a unit on dinosaurs to my students! The non-fiction books will give my students facts about how many dinosaurs there are, how long ago they lived, and what happened to them. The fiction books will give a little extra fun for what the students are learning, as well as some social skills that they so dearly need. The excavation kits will give my students a hands-on project to really understand how dinosaur bones are discovered, and how to take care of them. They will also put the pieces together to figure out which kind of dinosaur they have discovered as Paleontologists. With all these resources, I will be able to get my students as excited as I am about dinosaurs!

I have a small classroom library that I am continuing to build upon to share with my students.

I will be able to have several books about dinosaurs, and can use them to create a rich literacy environment for student learning. The excavation kits will motivate them as they become the scientists and learn how dinosaurs were discovered. It will show them that science is fun and exciting, and encourage them to become someone that can really make a difference in history.
