Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember reading your own issue of a child's magazine when you were in school? The experience of feeling so grown up because you were reading a magazine about real stuff.

My students live in a densely populated, high poverty area of Queens, New York.

We are a Title One school, which means all of my children are living below the Federal poverty level and all my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. My classroom of twenty-five, Kindergarten children is a mini United Nations. So many countries represented. So many cultures. So many languages. My families are hard working, who want the best for their children. They are looking to the NYC public schools to provide the best for their child. I want to honor them by making sure my students have all the resources necessary for them to learn the essentials and more.

My Project

I am asking for Time for Kids, Let's Find Out, and the Scholastic Special magazine about the 2012 elections. These magazines are non-fiction, which satisfies the Common Core requirement of additional non-fiction reading in all grades. Additionally, these magazines are targeted to the interests and reading levels of Kindergarten children. The articles are short and packed with information which will provide my students with background information for further inquiry. My students are on the edge of learning to read. I want to give them every tool available to make it a compelling experience. I want them to want to read not just read because I, as the teacher, says so. These magazines will expand their experiences and encourage them to learn more about new and different things. I am particularly excited about the election magazine. This is an exciting year and I want my students to understand the process.

The children in my class will become adults in a few years.

I want them to develop the skills necessary to be adults who understand the importance of reading and rereading all types of materials. Non-fiction is a special type of reading that requires practice. As adults, I want them to be informed about the world around them and also use their non-fiction reading skills in whatever career they have chosen. Please consider my students worthy of a donation.
