My Students

Living in a major city, in the midst of a technologically advancing world, it is imperative that my students have access to, and experience with the natural world. By providing these experiences early on, my students will be able to build their love and compassion to care for and protect the earth.

My kindergarten students attend a public K-8 charter in a large urban setting.

They represent a wide array of racial, socio-economic, and family backgrounds. They are inquisitive, quirky, and always eager to learn more! My students learn best though hands on experiences and projects, and delight at all opportunities to interact with the natural world. At our community oriented, equity based school, my students are taught using a hands on, art integrated curriculum. This curriculum strives for students to develop strong connections between themselves and the world around them.

My Project

In order for my students to fully experience and interact with the natural world, I am taking my class on field trips to various parks, estuaries, and beaches to teach them the explicit skills of observation. This requires that my students have the appropriate tools, such as the high quality binoculars and magnifying glasses that I am requesting. In addition, for my students to fully understand the life cycle of a butterfly and experience the joys and wonders of the natural world, they need real-life experience with them. By hatching live butterflies, and later releasing them into a butterfly garden (grown by my class), my students will gain amazing knowledge and perspectives of the natural world and the importance of protecting it.

By learning about and exploring the natural world and the interdependence between plants, animals, and people, my students will be able to be and feel more connected to, not only their own environment, but the world as a whole.

This connection builds their love and compassion for the earth and the animals and people who inhabit it.
