My Students

I teach in a public Kindergarten classroom in a District 75 school in Staten Island, New York. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as: Autism Spectrum Disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and/or multiple disabilities.

They are fearless when it comes to technology and, as children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage their world.

Many of my students come from diverse backgrounds and have many different educational needs. We are part of a larger school that celebrates inclusion. This year, I will have 3 lovely Kindergarteners!

My Project

Tablets for education have revolutionized the special education experience in many classrooms across the world. The devices help with different areas of learning, catering to the specific needs of children with various disabilities. Parents and educators can both take advantage of the ever-growing number of apps developed specifically for their child’s developmental needs. Tablets are intuitively designed to be easy to operate, and requires very basic inputs. Some research has even found that the use of tablets has benefited the development of fine motor skills for some of these children.

Every child with special needs will have individual learning requirements, to help them succeed tablets can be individually personalized to meet students’ unique needs.

Students with reading disabilities can use text-to-speech apps to get the help they need when they need it. My students with Autism have taken particularly well to tablet-based learning and there are numerous apps that address their specific needs. The apps can incorporate custom images and sounds that can be put into a checklist for a child’s daily events, or any activity that requires a transition.

There are many apps available for children with learning disabilities, with a slew of new programs coming out every year. As tablets become more commonplace in the special education classroom, schools and parents can look for the right tools to curate the ideal learning experience for each child.
