My Students

Can five and six year old kindergarten students really work and play independently? I can proudly say that I have twenty four independent learners who are always trying their very best to be successful at school.

In my Kindergarten class I have sixteen students in English Language Development Level one.

They need individual assistance and personal attention in many academic skills across the subject areas. My school is a Title I achievement school in California.

My Project

My students look forward to having small group instruction time every day because they can go to learning centers. While teachers work with a small group of students on the skills they need, the rest of the class plays academic games with each other or practices their Language Art and Math skills at different learning centers around the classroom. Especially, the phonemic awareness skills such as beginning/middle/ending sounds, blending and segmenting CVC words and rhyming are difficult for my English learners and they need different learning tools and resources to acquire those skills. My students also need white boards and great hands-on activities that will reinforce their mathematical skills such as number sense and numerical operations.

By having more academic games and learning centers available for my students to use, my small group instructional time will be more effective to ensure and maximize all students learning.
