Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high-poverty area of Los Angeles. The majority of my students are part of the free lunch program and come from low socio-economic home environments. Having money for food and other house hold expenses takes priority over buying learning games, books, or technology. Many students also have limited outside playtime to learn and explore due to unsafe neighborhoods.

My Kindergarten students deserve a classroom that has all types of resources to help them be creative in all academic areas.

I want to give my Kindergarten students a great first school experience that inspires them to develop a love of reading, writing, math and science through hands on activities and technology.

My Project

School is becoming a place where students need to work hard and play less. My Kindergarten students need to play in order to release their creative energy and learn at the same time. Through play, my students are using their verbal skills to communicate with their peers, expanding their creativity in role playing, learning to cooperate and share, and so much more. They always want to share what they made and I use this time to ask them how they built it and they can tell me in detail what they did as compared to when asked about what we just read. I hope to transfer these verbal skills and excitement over to other academic areas.

By playing and creating, my Kindergarten students are developing great skills that they can apply to other areas.

I usually bring to class the LEGO sets or other blocks that my own children are not using, but these are not enough for a full class and are limited on when they can play with them. I want my Kindergarten class to have enough LEGO sets and building toys such as the magnetic tiles so that they all have a chance to play and learn.
