My Students

What kind of a mathematical thinker are you these days? Need a paper & pencil? Need your fingers? Or does the latest app do the work for you? Imagine our world without great math minds. Our kids need the basics! They need to establish a strong foundation in math by first understanding the concrete.

In a very large public school district, I teach at a Title One elementary school of about 1000 students who come from different socioeconomic and culturally diverse backgrounds.

My 25 kindergarten students come to school everyday with an "I can!" attitude. They are hardworking, energetic 5 year old children who are excited to "show what they know!". They speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Armenian, Farsi and most come from immigrant families. With a varied level of abilities, special needs, and foundations in math skills, one thing that they do all have in common is their eagerness to "play with objects". Kindergarten students look forward to the times that they are given in class to explore concrete materials(math manipulatives). They are beginning to understand small numbers, quantities, and simple shapes in their everyday environment. They count, compare, describe and sort objects, and develop a sense of properties and patterns. They add and subtract using concrete objects.

My Project

I have requested manipulatives, number lines/chart, and a timer to teach addition & subtraction. Hands on learning keeps students' attention as they naturally want to play with and explore objects. When children can touch and move manipulative's or real things when learning new skills, their senses are involved in the learning experience. Children benefit when they are able to fully understand new concepts with concrete materials before they are expected to understand the same ideas with symbols. With the use of the manipulative's noted in my project, my kindergarten students will strengthen their understanding of sorting and classifying, patterns, basic counting skills, one-to-one correspondence and overall mathematical reasoning. From this understanding, they will move from the concrete to the abstract and will be able to solve addition and subtraction problems using abstract symbols (+/-/=) as they solve timed addition and subtraction problems using the number line. Differentiation!

Please help me enrich the mathematical brains of the future by providing them a strong foundation in concrete math.

I want to provide my students with opportunities to explore, manipulate, compare, contrast, construct and sort real objects. I want to take them from basic one-to-one correspondence or basic counting skills to higher level addition strategies such as "counting on". Establishing a strong kindergarten foundation in math builds confidence and a deep understanding. Why not make it fun?
