My Students

Wouldn't you just love to hear 5 & 6 year olds acting out parts of really funny books? Don't you think that they would get such enjoyment and gain so much self-confidence from making their peers, teachers, and parents laugh and at the same time impress them with their reading skills? You can help!

I am a teacher of gifted and talented kindergarten students in a lovely neighborhood in New York.

Our school is a neighborhood school where most other children walk to school and are picked up by one non-working parent. I have a class of 22 children from all over our area since they bus in our G&T children. Many of them have working parents and they therefore attend latchkey. I have just met my new class -- we've been together for about a month now. They are sweet and shy and it's still tough to get them to engage in classroom discussion. I have 15 girls and 7 boys in my class -- you'd think they'd be SO talkative!

My Project

Last year, my students were so completely engaged by the reading and writing units that used Mo Willems as a mentor that they didn't want it to end! The only complaint that they had was that there weren't enough of his books to go around. I did spend a lot of time at the library borrowing books, but it would be really great if the books actually belonged to the children! By having a double set of each Elephant & Piggie book, the children will each be able to hold one and therefore be able to actually act out the characters' words. I will be able to assign partnerships and perhaps even have a small performance at the end of the unit for the parents to see! My students will learn how to speak in character voices, how to respond to another "actor" and how to express themselves in a performance! I will also be able to share these books with my colleague across the hall who also teacher G&T kindergarten. Double bang for your buck!

I believe that children really need the proper amount of resources in order to succeed.

While my students are very lucky in the resources that they already have, most of them are contributed by their families. It would be really wonderful if they could be provided with enough books to truly do partner reading!
