My Students

Do you remember your first trip to the forest? My kindergarten students are strictly city kids, with little experience with the world beyond our neighborhood.

Our title 1 school is our district's lowest socio-economic school, with 100% of our students receiving free lunch.

They have had very few encounters with nature, besides the occasional squirrel or stray cat! Our administrator's main goal is to provide intense basic skills so our kids can catch up to their peers in the other schools in the district. While this is vital, I also believe it is equally important to give my students the same background experiences in life that students in more wealthy schools have. These experiences are what will challenge my students' thinking skills, give them exciting adventures to write about, as well as motivating and interesting topics to pursue when reading. A trip to our city's Audubon Sanctuary would be just that type of experience!

My Project

In my kindergarten class, I began the year with an Owl theme to motivate students and build excitement about beginning school. We have read about owls, researched their habitats on the internet, completed graphs and charts about owls, written informational posters about owls, made paper bag messenger owls, dissected owl pellets and even flew an owl kite so we could feel the joy of their ability to fly! When my students found out, after looking up the Portland Audubon society's web page, that we have many endangered owls in our state, they became concerned. They were especially touched by the story of Julio, the Great Horned owl that was brought to the sanctuary when his tree was cut down by loggers. They decided to raise the money to "adopt" him, knowing that this would help feed and care for him. My students are so engrossed in their study of owls, and I would love for them to have the hands-on experience of visiting the Sanctuary and taking part in their Owl program.

They will be able to walk the forest where the owls live in their natural habitat, handle eggs and other artifacts, and complete other owl related projects.

The major event, of course, is that they will actually get to meet their owl friend, Julio! Experiences like this one are remembered for a lifetime! To have a first experience with nature, as well as being able to see the outcome of a service project first hand is priceless. Please help me provide my students with this wonderful experience!
