Kindergarten Inventions for Senior Citizens

Help me give my students the opportunity to think globally, empathize, design, and CREATE an "invention" with a 3D printer that may better the lives of our local Senior Citizens.

My Students

The things I love most about my Kindergarteners are their innocence and their enthusiasm when exploring the world around them. Young minds are so accepting and kind. They want to help each other and are genuinely concerned about their classmates. Students come in at all academic levels and soon pick up on other student's abilities. It is important, as a teacher, to instil confidence and self-worth in every child. Each child learns differently, whether it be visually, auditorily or kinesthetically. During Back to School Night, a parent approached me with the fear her son was dyslexic. Her daughter struggles in school and she was very concerned he would face the same challenges. I wanted to make him successful by tapping into his strengths and interests.

He was able to build a shelf for our classroom, even though he couldn't recognize letters or numbers.

Along with another little boy cheering him on chanting " you almost got it, you almost got it!" my little engineer was able to follow picture directions and work collaboratively. We now have a shelf to hold our books. There is no substitution for being proud of your accomplishments.

My Project

Kindergarteners do not come in on a level playing field when it comes to academics, but they do all come in "Wide Eyed " and full of wonderment. Tapping into their altruistic nature and nurturing their sense of compassion for others is an important value to preserve.

Kindergarteners are compassionate about exploring, creating and helping.

I'd like to give them the opportunity to use 21st Century skills such as learning technology, working collaboratively and being productive. We've created a MAKER SPACE in our school which gives children the opportunity to think outside of the box. I'd like to take it to the next level and work with them to create an invention that may help someone in the community such as our Senior Citizens.

Having a 3D printer will allow us to create an "invention" beyond a "macaroni necklace" that would be sustainable and useable. The Cricut would give the Kindergarteners autonomy when creating and coding their project. They could design on the iPad and then create dimensional projects with the Cricut. Allowing children to create and problem solve through technology and multidimensional materials and not just focus on paper and pencil tasks, just may inspire a future engineer, architect or scientist.
