Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Going to school for the first time ever can be exciting, scary and unpredictable, do you remember ? Remember wanting to be brave and not cry. Many of my students will feel like that in the next two weeks. I hope to have the appropriate material to engage and teach them what they need to learn.

The students that will be entering my class are all Spanish speaking students.

Some of them have had the privilege of participating in a head start program or Pre-Kindergarten program and many will enter a classroom for the first time ever. Kindergarteners are natural learners who are more that willing to explore, inquire and learn from each other. I can anticipate that many of them will be very nervous for it will be the first time to leave their caregivers for most part of the day. The class that they will be entering is a transitional bilingual program located in the South Bronx in NYC. The program nurtures the students primary language in this case Spanish. At the same time they will be taught the elements needed to meet Common Core State Standards and reach the goal of building the foundation of college and career readiness. Kindergarteners will engage in interactive learning activities with specific strategies that supports their English language development.

My Project

The current classroom setting entails a meeting rug, desks and chairs, the units of study and one computer. The materials that is being considered at this point will enhance the students' learning and level of engagement. The listening center will provide an area designated to listen to sounds and words from native speakers. It will allow them to develop an ear for new sounds and unique variations of the new language to them. The students will come into the classroom with some or no knowledge of letter sounds and letter formation or even a sight word knowledge. The reading center sets will be used by them to enhance their learning in a fun and interactive manner. The classroom has a library, but it does not have guided reading center that can assist student read one level above their own. The printer will be used to print color visuals that will allow the students to see objects as natural as possible. Students will be more engaged as well as supported.

The materials that are being considered at this point will allow the students to be engaged in everyday interactive learning.

Students will find themselves having fun without realizing that they will be learning how to read, discuss, question and articulate within the units of study throughout the year. The colorful visuals will help them understand the world around them and the interactive games will help them develop word consciousness, cooperation as well as team building and citizenship.
