Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!

My students worry about coming to school and staying safe; and yet, they still want to come to school to explore, learn and grow.

I am teaching online and trying to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.

My Project

My students were given a very small pack of 11 pattern blocks to start the school year. It contained 1 hexagon, 2 trapezoids, 3 diamonds, and 6 triangles. The rhombus and square are missing from this set. I ask them to create with these blocks, but they are very limited to what they can create due to the quantity and variety of shapes provided in the small set. To show me their work, my students must tilt their design and risk losing it in the process.

Magnetic Pattern Blocks will help my students create and share their designs on their magnetic boards while distance learning.

They are learning how to combine shapes to make hexagons. This magnetic set includes 49 magnetic pattern blocks with all 6 shapes included. What a set! It is amazing! I have one set for me that I use to show lessons to my students online. My kids would LOVE to have a magnetic set of their own. Then, they could share what they have created more easily.

The pattern block dice are especially wonderful to play games with pattern block shapes. The dice will make learning a game and make it fun for my kindergartners. Thank you for considering my project for your donations.
