Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten students come into my classroom full of wonder and curiosity. Because they live in the International District in Albuquerque, NM, they often contemplate how they fit into the world, and what they can offer.

We are in a Title I community school, where every child receives free breakfast and lunch.

Our school has a very high mobility rate. We have recently decided to become a Project Based Learning school, moving towards Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math (S.T.E.A.M.). Our kindergarten team will be working on a few projects this year, including cultural exploration.

My Project

For this project, each child will be responsible for learning something about a new country, and will make and present a type of food and toy from the culture. The books I'm requesting provide a kindergarten-appropriate way to begin learning research skills. As a whole group, the students will study a broad range of information about different cultures through short videos, direct instruction and read-alouds. They will then decide which one to dive deeply into with their 4th grade reading buddies.

My students are the future leaders of this world.

They will become more sensitive and accepting to the cultures around them. Each child will be able to tell the differences between themselves and others, as well as what makes everyone the same.
