Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Imagination will take you everywhere." --Albert Einstein This quote encompasses kindergartners. They have big imaginations, and in my classroom, I have the chance to hear their stories and listen to their questions.

My school is a dual-language, child-centered school.

At my school, we believe speaking more than one language is an asset. I teach in English and Spanish and give the children hands-on experiences to help them develop academic language. My classroom has children who come from Spanish speaking homes and children who are learning Spanish.

My Project

Kindergartners are scientists! They constantly ask questions and use their senses to explore the world around them. Our science unit, “Exploring Properties,” will have the children asking many questions about rocks, wood, metal, fabric, and plastic. We need books about these topics, and we need an assortment of objects to explore. With these resources, the children can learn about the different properties of materials and how these properties change. Children can conduct float and sink experiments and check to see what metal is magnetic. They can sort the materials and describe their size, shape, and texture.

My students will benefit from this "Exploring Properties" project because they'll actually have the materials with which to conduct the experiments.

My students will develop language around the properties of materials. They will use their five senses to describe and sort materials. These skills are essential to begin their learning trajectory in science!
