This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 26 amazing kindergarten scholars who are all very creative, resilient, and caring. Our school just opened in South Central last year so we do not have many resources yet, but we hope to have plenty in the future!

Every day, my students work hard to better themselves.

They have a great thirst for knowledge and use the resources they have to learn as much as they can. I am so impressed by their ability to learn new information and share it with others.

My Project

With the use of construction toys my students will have access to age-appropriate materials that will allow them to be engaged in innovative STEAM learning opportunities that will allow them to solve real-world problems connected to our classroom literature. Imagine Kindergarten students being able to design and build an alternate bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff that avoids evicting trolls, a new chair for baby bear to replace the one Goldilocks broke, or a wolf proof house for the Three Little Pigs. Our class conducts weekly engineering challenges using small household products I buy from the 99 cents store, but my class is really interested in construction and we'd love to have building materials that are large enough to fit children inside so they can really see the power of engineering and design come alive.

Integrating STEAM learning in early childhood education lays a foundation for my students that will give them the opportunity to learn many important life skills like the power of perseverance and teamwork.

I want my students to enjoy learning and understand that simple mistakes are just another opportunity to learn and grow. I am hoping these play-based tools will not only help them develop foundational visual-perception and fine motor skills, but they will help foster an understanding that mistakes are just another part of the learning process. I want my students to develop a growth-mindset that will influence their life as they continue their education and grow into productive members of our global community. I hope that these early opportunities to STEAM exposure, in combination with our social studies lessons, will encourage my students have an interest in careers in fields like architecture, engineering, or product design where they can use their knowledge to change the world.
