My Students

My kinder students look forward to our daily read-aloud, but imagine what a listening center would do for them! To expose them not only to a variety of literature, but to also have them listen to various voices, sounds effects, background music, etc...It will open up a whole new world!

Our school is a California Distinguished School, but don't let that deter you.

Although we are a higher performing school in our district, there are still many areas of need. We are a Title 1 school, and more than half of my class receive free or reduced meals at school. The school's (and therefore, our classroom's) population is predominantly Latino, with a large Spanish-speaking community. Many of my students are the first, or at the most second generation in their family to be born in the United States.

My Project

My students need a listening center, headphones and library including favorites such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Fairy Tales and Harold and the Purple Crayon, to build their literacy skills. Due to students' diverse backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, home situations, etc... they may not have access to literature, period, much less high-quality literature with accompanying audio discs. To some I may be the only model and opportunity that they have to view and listen to books. With the listening center and library I have requested, all of my students will have access to these resources on a daily basis. They will be able to hear their favorite stories, modeled by expert readers (besides myself, of course), with all the extra sound effects and music that I cannot provide during my regular daily read-aloud. Students will not only master concepts of print, but will be developing their vocabulary and reading skills at the same time. Plus, it will last for years and many more students!

As they say, today's readers are tomorrow's leaders, and I feel that that all can start with the donation of a class listening center and library.

By having this in our classroom, and students being able to use it daily, it will foster a love of reading and learning in my Kindergarten students, a love that I hope will continue far, far into their futures.
