Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Good Nutrition starts here! We teach four kindergarten classes in a new Charter School in a low income, high-needs neighborhood.

Our school is located in an area with one of the highest diabetes rates in the city. It is impossible to not notice the lack of nutritional value in our students snacks. Our school is surrounded by corner stores where chips and candy are plentiful but there is not an apple in sight.

We know that it is essential that children learn as early as possible about the importance of eating healthy balanced meals. We want to create a cooking program in which twice a month we will choose a healthy recipe to cook with our students. We will buy the ingredients and the children will prepare, cook and eat the recipe. This will expose them to different, ingredients, tastes and give them ideas to try at home. We will need four sets of cooking utensils (one for each class) which include measuring cups, mixing bowls, baking pans and spoons. This will allow us to prepare our recipes in our classroom. We also need one convection oven so that we can bake and heat up our recipes.

Your generosity will help instill healthy eating habits in young children and give them the tools to make good food choices for the rest of their lives. They will learn that food can taste good and also be good for you. It will also teach them how to work together and eat together helping to build a strong classroom community.
