This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sitting still is difficult enough for a kindergartener, but to have to sit still while being cramped together on a carpet with other kindergarteners makes it much more difficult to pay attention. The temptation to play with a friend is too great!

My school is located in a rough area of the Bronx.

My students receive a reduced rate or free lunch. Many of them are English language learners with very little help and support at home. I tried to make the oval carpet work but it is difficult to fit 30 students on the small oval carpet. They are sitting too close and they cannot see the books being read. They have so little at home and I feel that if they are given the luxury of a comfortable carpet to sit on and help enrich their learning, they'd appreciate it very much. The carpet is much more than classroom furniture. It will brighten up the classroom, make the classroom seem more kindergarten friendly, provide them with ample space to sit on the carpet, and be a teaching tool (the carpet activities can be used in many ways).

My Project

The carpet has alphabet that can be used for various learning activities; however, the main use of the carpet will be to provide students with a place to sit during read alouds and instruction. Students will have a designated spot on the carpet, ample space, and a thick comfortable carpet to learn on.

A carpet will make my classroom more kid friendly, allow my students to sit comfortably when on the carpet, and provide them with fun activities to do using the alphabet on the carpet.

The carpet allows me to quickly and effectively transition from carpet activities to table activities, as each child will have a designated spot, with space between each child, and be able to easily locate their spots. Additionally, the alphabet printed on the carpet can be used for independent center activities.
