Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine 25 kindergarten students joyously singing to celebrate the start of a new day. I get to begin each morning to the sound of their little voices, and they bring this energy with them throughout the course of the day as they learn to become proficient in both Spanish and English through our dual language program. We are an Expeditionary Learning school that leads students through the inquiry process to become experts in their science studies!

I teach kindergarten at a progressive dual language school in Washington Heights, New York.

Washington Heights is a primarily Dominican neighborhood where many of my students are immigrants and speak Spanish at home. I have an integrated classroom, meaning that 25-40% of my students have special needs. Despite the various needs of my students, each child is supported to take ownership of their learning and achieve their goals. I believe that it is my job to empower young learners to become change-makers who advocate for themselves and others. My students are incredibly curious and eager to learn!

My Project

These highly engaging books will be treasured by my students as we enjoy them one by one during our cozy story time. In this list of almost 40 titles, kids will learn about the seasons, feelings, and follow the adventures of their favorite characters.

Hearing books read aloud, improves vocabulary and literacy skills!

Not only will these books be read aloud to my students at school, they can even be used in our lending library for parents to read with their kids at home! Providing high quality books in Spanish and English helps families create memories and build their love of reading together.
