My Students

I recently attempted to buy some extra book pouches to accommodate increasing class size. Upon my inquiry, I was informed that my original pouches were discontinued. However, as it turned out, the next closest item was perfect for our new reader's workshop model!

Each one of my 22 kindergarten students walks to school every day-- past the homeless, drug dealers, and street walkers that comprise the neighborhood surrounding our school-- the neighborhood they call home.

Most of their parents report that there are not books or technology of any kind available for children to access in their homes. Many of families do not speak English and are unable to assist students with academic activities.

My Project

For the past few years, I have been using wonderful book pouches from Donors Choose donors. They have kept our books organized and minimized wear and tear in the chair pockets where children keep their personal work materials. Since we have tables in place of desks in kindergarten, many items are stored in the chair pockets, so a special, sealed location for books is needed to prevent what I like to call book destruction. When I recently tried to replace a few missing pouches, the salesperson led me to a wonderful pouch with two pockets. Although it is designed to go home, the pouch is perfect for our new in-class workshop model: student names go on the front and there are two sections, one for books to "work on" at student independent reading level and the other for books to "enjoy"- classic storybooks or student favorites that may be too difficult for students to conventionally read, but which they can still use to retell and enjoy the illustrations.

These new book pouches will allow my students to organize their reading materials and keep our wonderful books safe from disaster.

Just as importantly, they will make our reader's workshop time more efficient. As I tell my students, our reading time is so important that we don't want to waste a single second.
