My Students

My name is Nina, and I am a Special Education teacher in New York City. I am lucky to have a home, food, and family, but many New York City children do not have these basic necessities. I have not yet met my scholars for the 2015-16 school year, but know that they all have Multiple Disabilities.

My students are in the most restrictive learning environment, and many of them require health para professionals who assist my students in basic human functions like feeding and diapering in addition to being a huge influence in their learning.

My class during summer school was incredible, and although I am at a different school in the Fall, I will always remember how they helped to shape my first experiences as a Special Educator. When providing rigorous curriculum, despite their disabilities, each and everyone of my students rose to the challenge and exceeded my greatest expectations.

My Project

The materials on my list are essential in my students' learning. These scholars require tangible items and visuals to aide in their learning process. They also require sensory items that assist in the strengthening of their fine and gross motor development which is, for many of them delayed. My students will use the tangible math tools to help them better understand addition and subtraction concepts, which will also provide them opportunities for differentiated learning. In addition, I have also requested reading and writing materials that utilize vocal directions, visual prompts, and other sensory elements to ensure each of my students has the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills while working with different mediums. Also, since many of my students are in wheelchairs bean bag seats can be a comfortable option for these children to sit in during sensory time and reading time. We sincerely appreciate your help, and can't wait for September!

I desperately seek your help to provide my students the classroom they need, while I work diligently to be the teacher they deserve.

My students need visuals, physical manipulatives, and speech and language technology. Some of them are verbal, and some are non-verbal, but regardless, they all must be heard. We require a range of materials to provide these children opportunities for differentiated learning and success. I thank you for your help and kindness!
