Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My fifth graders are getting ready to graduate elementary school, but there has always been something missing for this group: their Kindergarten graduation. Because they were in Kindergarten during the pandemic, they never got to celebrate at our school's annual “Kinderbration", and believe it or not, they still talk about it. To help give them a moment of joy and closure, we’re planning a “Kindergarten for a Day” celebration. This idea came from the students themselves and they are extremely excited! We’ll spend part of the day doing the fun, hands-on activities they didn’t get to do back then -- activities like building with Legos, creating with Play-Doh, magnetic tiles, card games and making origami. It’s a way to celebrate how far they’ve come, while also honoring what they missed.

But this project isn’t just for one day.

I’ll also be using these materials next year as part of our once-weekly “soft starts.” These are calm, creative activities that help students ease into the day, connect with each other, and build social-emotional skills. Things like building together, solving problems, and just having a little space to create and breathe.

This project is about joy, connection, and giving kids the chance to be kids, even if just for a little while.
