This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students continue to prove that children from low-income neighborhoods can thrive.

Our school sits in the middle of the poorest congressional district in the United States.

We have the third-highest percentage of single mothers in America and host some of the nation's highest childhood asthma rates. Ten years ago, our school was one of the city's lowest-performing schools. It was a chaotic place, simply focused on providing a safe environment for students to visit during the day.

Today, ours is a model school whose teachers embrace responsive classroom teaching strategies. Students reading and comprehension scores have increased from their record lows by five hundred percent. Parent satisfaction and support for school efforts are high, teachers provide innovative and engaging instruction, and everyone involved with the school rates its leadership top notch. In large part, our collaborative and effort focused school culture has helped students embrace a growth mindset; the idea that struggle and even failure breeds success. These lessons are embedded in everything we do.

I am amazed by and incredibly proud of my students. Despite the many obstacles they have to overcome, students come to school everyday eager and ready to learn.

My Project

My youngest students love physical education. We work on fundamental movements, locomotor skills, mindfulness, and self-expression.

Our school is lucky to have a full closet of athletic and sports equipment that meets our older student needs, but we're lacking resources that enhance 3 to 6-year-olds' engagement in class.

This project funds a few read-aloud storybooks, a drum, a class set of beaded jump ropes, a voice amplifier, and a Tibetan singing bowl. The drum will help students conceptualize "pace" as they relate the drum's rhythm to their movements. The singing bowl will help focus students' attention during mindfulness periods, and the storybooks will help me introduce new concepts read-aloud style. The beaded jump ropes are ideal for students first learning to skip-rope, and help build on the idea of rhythm as it relates to movement.
