Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the phrase you are like a kid in a candy store? Well that is what it's like in my classroom. Instead of candy it's the computer. My students love the computer. The problem is, there is only "ONE" computer for 28 students. It takes weeks to complete the rotation to get everyone on.

I teach in a public school in New York.

I have 28 exciting five year old risk-takers in my Kindergarten classroom. As soon as I pick them up in the morning, the first question is "Is it my turn to go on the computer yet?" They love going on Star Fall or the Scholastic websites. They love the computer games and the different activities they do on the computer. They are so excited during center. However, center time usually come with tears when they don't get the opportunity to go on the computer. It breaks my heart every time I try to explain that there is only one computer and it will take three weeks for you to get a turn.

My Project

Having more than one laptop in my classroom will provide more students the opportunity to be on the computer more frequently. It will also provide time for me to do small group work with students based on their level. For example, I can work with a group of six students on letters and sounds or work with students on reading books on their level on the computer. The laptops provide another way to differentiate my lessons and meet different learning styles while the children are learning. They are so excited when they are on the computer.

We are living in a technological age where everything is done on computers.

Exposing students at an early age affords them the opportunity to learn about the computer and how to use the computer in a safe and controled environment. As they continue their educational journey, they will be required to use computers for papers and projects in school. Let's start the technological journey now.
