My Students

My kindergarten students are incredible. They are eager to learn and explore the world around them. For fifty percent of my class, English is not their first language. Fifty percent of my class are students with special needs. Several of my students are in both groups.

Hurricane Harvey displaced several of my students and many of their parents don't have the opportunity to help them.

My students are faced with several challenges such as poverty, displacement, language acquisition and more. But my students are empowered to learn! They want to read, count and develop. They have big dreams!

My Project

As a result of Hurricane Harvey, there was overcrowding in the classroom. I was transferred from a different school, different grade to address the thirty plus kindergarteners in one room. Now the classrooms are balanced but there were no resources for my new room. With the new year, there was hope of budget increases but January only brought more cuts and no hope of basic classroom manipulatives.

With the many children with diverse needs in my class, they need to get hands-on!

These classroom supplies will ensure enough manipulatives for each child to get deeper involved in their learning and create more excitement and desire. These supplies will support everyday learning: alphabet letters so they can learn new sight words in small groups, unifix cubes to model addition and subtraction, and literacy centers that promote independence.

I can see the look on my students' faces when I bring blocks, letters and new math/literacy center materials to the room. Sheer joy! I cannot wait to use that opportunity to prolong their desire to learn.
