A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Our school services Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. It is a small school with only one classroom of each grade level. It is located in a small rural farming community in southern Illinois, that has a low income/high poverty rate.
Our school is the safe place for most children in our small community.
They know they will get the support they need to face their daily personal and educational challenges. Many are being raised by single parents or family members struggling to make ends meet. A high percentage of our students qualify to receive free/reduced breakfast/lunch. Despite the challenges they face at home, they are all eager to learn and have fun at school.
All of the teachers and administrator work as a team/family and strive to instill the excitement for learning in every student. Every classroom has a teacher that is an expert, hard working and dedicated to making their classrooms engaging, fun, and yet meeting the needs of all the students everyday. Despite all of the challenges our students face on a day-to-day basis, the school staff couldn't be prouder that our students have some of the highest test scores in our district.
My Project
My Kindergarten classroom currently has 5 iPads, but 19 children. Another classroom iPad would allow the Kindergarten students to work individually or with a partner in a fun and engaging manner, all while reinforcing the skills they are learning everyday. An iPad can be used across the curriculum. With over 65,000 apps designed for education, the iPad has the possibilities of customizing and meeting the instructional needs of all students, despite their ability levels. Students can learn at their own level and pace. It can provide students with a new engaging way to learn, and help to prepare them for the future of technology in our world. An iPad can strengthen fine motor skills as students use their finger to move and write on the screen. A touch screen is easier for a 5 year old to maneuver than a computer mouse. It is engaging, interactive, and it provides immediate feedback to the children. Studies have shown, it provides more time on task and less independent frustration. It can be used in a variety of ways across the curriculum to enhance the Kindergarten learning standards such as: letter & number identification and recognition, counting, sorting, patterning, segmenting & blending sounds, fluency with reading, handwriting, 1:1 matching, and much more!
