Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a special education teacher, my day is full of reading, writing and math. My favorite quote: "I learned to read this year". I want those same students to become writers and communicators; to gain skills & confidence; and share their work & abilities with others.

Our school has 95% free or reduced lunches.

This indicates that our neighborhood is economically challenged. 65+% of our students are minority members. My third, fourth, and fifth grade students require special education services for reading, writing and math. My class is made-up of students who struggle with foundational skills, and need instruction that specializes in meeting their needs. My students range in ability from Kindergarten to third grade. They need extra support, encouragement, and motivation to assist them in making the greatest gains they can with the disabilities that they are learning to cope with. Although they have to work harder than most of their peers to try to learn their lessons, they are learning to persevere, not lose hope, and do their best.

My Project

My students will use the document camera to share with their peers what they have written in response to an academic question. Sometimes it will be writing, such as a short essay, or research that they are working on; and sometimes it will be math. In both cases the students will be able to show their peers what they are working on, how they are progressing or solving the question; and will be able to participate in peer discussion about their own work. Standing at the projector, the students will get to be the center of attention. This daily activity will motivate students to do their best, teach them to communicate what they are thinking, and to be respectful of one another. The document camera will be a tool that will help them to gain experience and confidence interacting with others about their own thoughts and processes; and will reinforce what they are learning.

Students who live with learning disabilities, need all the help and encouragement that they can get.

Any tool that will increase their engagement and motivation is a huge benefit to a child who faces hurdle after hurdle all day long. The document camera will to encourage their thoughtfulness, and communication skills. It will let them be a star.
