My Students

Currently I have twenty-seven kindergarten students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Nineteen of my scholars are participating in the 100 mile club. This is a national club that I have brought to my school. This year we have 221 total participants at our school, grades pre-K to fifth. Three days a week, the students arrive to school twenty five minutes early. They go out to the playground, stretch out and run, jog, or walk the track. Sometimes we have parents joining in on the exercise. The miles and love for running begin to build almost instantly.

Along the journey toward 100 miles, the athletes practice personal goal setting, team spirit, perseverance, poise, confidence and honest self-evaluation.

Throughout the year, the students look forward to celebrating their own accomplishments. At each 25 mile marker the child receives a t-shirt, pencil, and finally a gold medal. This athletic program has already increased our attendance levels and lowered our tardy rate.

My Project

One thing that would really enhance my students' physical fitness level and participation is a portable powered speaker system. This will allow me to roll the sound system out to the track and recharge the batteries after practice.

In the fall, students have a lot of enthusiasm and excitement for starting our running program.

By spring, we usually only have about 50 runners a day. I have seen, at other schools, how running to lively, fun and inspiring music keeps the momentum going strong right to the end of school in June.

Your generous donation will keep my runners motivated, enthusiastic, and focused. These student athletes are eager to log in as many miles as possible for the year. The first person to reach 100 miles was one of my kindergartners. This five year old beat out all the fifth grade runners. I am hoping that his desire for physical education continues for at least the next five years while I am coaching this worthwhile running program.
