My Students

Currently, I have twenty-five Kindergarten students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The 100 Mile Club provides students the opportunity to run or walk 100 miles at school during a single school year. This athletic program has shown to improve school readiness to learn and create better educational outcomes. This builds self-esteem and the overall health in the lives of children and others. This is a national club that I have brought to our school. This year we have 250 participants at our school, grades pre-kindergarten to fifth. Three days a week, the students arrive at school twenty-five minutes early. They go out to the playground, stretch out, and run, jog or walk the track. The miles and love for running begin to build almost instantly.

My Project

The biggest challenge I face when trying to engage my students' families in their learning is participation. Not many parents come on campus before work to help count laps. While holding the tablet I can easily scan and track each runner's total mileage by school, class, and individual. Students and parents can view their personal progress online or by a free mobile app. At our school, we do not have a lot of parent participation. This software program would make it easy for me to count the daily mileage without spending hours using logbooks and spreadsheets. Last year, students as young as five years old were reaching the 100 mile mark.
