Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Most people have entered the digital world. But our school has been left behind. I am a high-school art teacher, currently teaching basic art and digital photography. I teach sophomores through seniors in a high-needs community. Our school has a lot of artistic talent, but unfortunately, we are lacking the materials we need to provide them with successful opportunities.

This year, our school was lucky enough to get a grant to convert our darkroom into a brand-new digital lab. However, many of our high-needs students do not own cameras, which makes succeeding in this class quite difficult. Our department used to have plenty of cameras for students to sign out, but now we only have a couple that are also frequently borrowed by teachers.

My students need 2 digital cameras for their digital photography class. Since many students do not have their own camera, teaching the camera during class is very difficult. If we had a couple more cameras for students to use, their understanding of the cameras would be greatly enhanced. Also, they (these cameras will only be available to the students) will be able to check cameras out more frequently, thus take more pictures, and deepen their understanding of the subject.

These students have many stories to tell, pictures to take and much to learn about themselves, their community and photography. By allowing them more opportunities to experience photography, you will be greatly enhancing their school experience and their appreciation for the arts. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated by all the students, whose learning will come to life.
