My Students

Every day students are expected to read a novel of their choice--they LOVE choosing a book that interests them--for the first ten to fifteen minutes of class. Throughout the year, we integrate these independent books into projects and various assignments.

My new school is in a quiet, small town.

It is a close-knit community that is proud and supportive of the school. I don't know exactly who my students are yet, but I imagine they are like most students anywhere--they want to be challenged, engaged, respected, and loved. This all starts with a relationship, and I try to establish this relationship through student interests and books.

My Project

Students will use these books every single day. In fact, the first day of school I start with a book talk over many of these books to get students interested in them. From that day on students will choose books that interest them and will read every day for the first ten to fifteen minutes of class. Students are expected to write in a daily reading log and conference with me about their books. Students will use these books for several projects throughout the year. One project includes analyzing their novel to identify the theme; students create a quote or research a quote that they feel directly represents the theme in their book. Students begin to take ownership in their reading, but most importantly they learn that reading can be enjoyable. With this program, I hope to instill a passion for reading in all students that develops them into life-long readers.

In reality, students have very little time or simply won't read outside of school.

My goal with the Independent Reading Program is to give students time to actually read in class, and to inspire them to read more by allowing student choice. Students set reading goals throughout the year and are amazed at how much they read--when they are actually reading something they enjoy. This year my students have read 725 books!
