This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I find it difficult to convince my kinder students that reading is exciting when all that we have are photo copies of books for guided reading instruction. My goal is to meet every student's needs using the Leveled Books Classroom Library, while helping them become successful, enthusiastic readers.

My students are a wonderful group of busy, full-day kindergarten kids at a new public school in Henderson, NV.

They learn to love reading with our shared reading experiences, however, I feel like I'm selling them short when I hand over a photo copy of a book for guided reading instruction and try to convince them it is good quality literature, when it's not. They are so capable and are naturally drawn to the books with the colorful illustrations and exciting titles.

My Project

If we have authentic, leveled literature in color, I will be able to provide quality small-group instruction and independent reading. My students will be able to read from a variety of literary genres, develop book and print awareness, analyze interesting text, identify story elements, and draw conclusions with books that are just right for their individual levels. They will be able to choose what they want to read and will become practiced, self-motivated readers. I've been teaching kindergarten for 10 years, and it has been my dream to provide a Leveled Books Classroom Library full of wonderful stories to share with my students.

These five year-old children come to school barely knowing their letters and sounds.

They are expected to be fluent readers by the end of the year. Of all the grades in elementary school, I think kindergarten kids are faced with the biggest challenge. I believe they deserve and need the most important tool of the classroom; books! Your donation will allow those little kindergarten kids the opportunity to not only acquire the skills of reading, but fall in love with reading!
