Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Kids & Kindness, a program conducted by the Humane Society of Santa Clara is a wonderful school enrichment program that teaches lifelong values of responsibility and kindness towards others through learning about the role of companion pets as important members of the family and community. Kids & Kindness is a 8 week program. A volunteer teacher from the Humane Society will come to our class for an hour each week accompanied by her dog, Grady. However, the program is not free because there are curriculum materials involved. Students are given classwork assignments as well as homework, which requires them to talk to their parents about issues that are discussed in class. This allows for excellent home/school communication as well as parent/child communication. It creates a forum where parents can discuss their views on issues with their children. Children are expected to complete a research project on a domesticated animal. In past workshops, children have been delighted to have an opportunity to find out more about their own pet or their favorite animal. As required by California State Law (Education Code 44806), schools must provide humane education programs to teach the facts, values and behaviors, which promote respect for life, concern for the environment and appropriate behavior for animals, both human and non-human. This will be my 6th year with the Kids & Kindness Program. Each year I hear only positive feedback from the children and their parents about the program. I teach 3rd grade in South San Jose, California at Hayes Elementary School. Each year, I teach 20 students. My students are a diverse group. I have children who are Hispanic, Vietnamese, Filipino, African American, and Caucasian. There is also a small portion of my class who are English language learners. This year I have also invited two autistic children from the special day class to attend the classes. The Kids & Kindness program helps create a comfortable learning environment for my diverse class.
