My Students

My class is a self-contained class for young students with Autism. The curriculum is the standard curriculum for grade-level regular education students.

All of my students are developmentally delayed, have attention issues and difficulty focusing as well as sensory processing issues.

This makes their day very demanding and challenging. In addition to academics, they are learning social skills. Social skills lessons include everything from table etiquette to sharing and taking turns. Since they are so young, they really have a lot to learn!

Their favorite part of the day is recess. This gives them an opportunity to just focus on what they want to do and to move. No demands. Many enjoy the sensation of swinging. Some like to move the rocks on the playground and watch them fall. And some just run because they need to move.

My Project

The dump trucks and balls will give my students an opportunity to de-stress and enjoy their recess. They have sensory needs that have to be met. They need a break from the academic and social demands of their day.

They need a time just for them where they can do what they love.

I have some students who really love to move rocks. And I have some who need to move and bounce! Some need a safer opportunity for large muscle movements that impact their joints. The bouncy balls will be a safe alternative to jumping off of the top of the playground equipment.
