My Students

My incoming fourth grade students, whom I also taught as third graders, attend a small elementary school in New York City. They are an extremely diverse group, in terms of ethnic background, socio-economic status, native language, and special education needs.

I am lucky to be working again with this group of enthusiastic, creative, lively, hard-working, and inspiring kids!

I am also lucky to be working at a school that deeply values hands-on learning and the amazing, unique field trips that are available to us as New Yorkers.

My Project

This project will cover the costs so I can take my fourth graders on an unforgettable field trip to New York City's Lower East Side Tenement Museum. This unique site is a real tenement building, with apartments restored to show how tenants lived at different points in 19th and 20th-century history.

Showcasing the lives of immigrants from places like Ireland, Germany, and Turkey, the building provides an authentic and memorable glimpse of the struggles and joys of new Americans at a pivotal point in immigration history.

My students will also get to participate in a powerful program called Sweatshop Workers. In this activity, students learn about the work that many turn-of-the-century families did at home to make a living. They will actually spend some time doing similar work in order to get a taste of what it might be like to spend hours every day making artificial flowers or sewing clothing, as many tenement-dwellers did.

In past visits, students have found this a highly memorable experience that has supported our curriculum in ways that only a field trip can.
