A four-year-old's sense of wonder makes every minute the right time to stop and "smell the roses." My job is to create a high quality environment to explore, then experience the adventure along with them. I teach a self-contained full-day preschool class in a public school just outside New Orleans. My 20 four- and five-year-olds have the innate curiosity of natural scientists. To aid them in their quest to understand the "why" of everything, I want to get some hermit crabs, ladybugs, frogs, and crickets. Watching small animals in their habitats will provide opportunities for my preschoolers to come up with even more questions -- and figure out the answers by using their own observations. Caring for these animals will help children understand how their actions affect other creatures. They will learn about the different stages in the life cycles of animals that metamorphose. We will use age-appropriate tools to measure size, volume, and time. My preschoolers will have compelling reasons to talk, draw, read, and write, as well as the new vocabulary with which to do it. The materials I'm requesting are a hermit crab habitat with two hermit crabs, a frog habitat with tadpoles, a ladybug habitat with ladybug larvae, and a cricket habitat with crickets. I am also asking for 10 Megalens magnifying glasses. I wish everyone could spend time with four-year-olds. Learning is what comes naturally to them, so let's give them something to learn about!
