My Students

Watching a seed grow into a plant, using cool word spacers and pencil grips to write a simple sentence, and storytelling time with pictures show that using these special interests materials can be a window to motivate my students with autism to engage in every day educational activities.

My students are a wonderful group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders affected by autism.

They attend a special day program for autism in a public school in California. Our classroom, which is nestled in an isolated area of the school, has a nice view of the grassy field surrounded by tall trees, which makes for a nice learning environment. Every day my students are discovering something new about their surroundings. When they venture outside the classroom, they are in awe of nature. They wonder what makes the sky blue, what makes a leaf change color, and how a seed grows into a plant. Inside our classroom, my students are mesmerized during story time. They love listening to stories especially when the characters come to life with pictures and puppets. It is through story time that they earn how to use their imagination. My students are also learning how to respond to literature. They can write a simple sentence with some assistance. But they desire to be more independent.

My Project

It would be awesome if my class had special interests materials for science, story time, and writing. My kids love science! If our classroom had the "Earth and Environment Theme" box and "See it Grow Plant" lab, we could conduct experiments, learn about the importance of recycling, protecting our environment, and gain a better understanding of our surroundings. They also love story time! If our classroom had the "Class Storytelling", I could adapt the reading curriculum to make the stories come to life. This would help my kids understand what, where, when, and how questions following a story read aloud. A "Literature Center" in the classroom will encourage independence. I can create math and writing centers that they can go to and participate in hands-on activities with minimal support. Also, pencil grips and word spacers will support them in writing their sentences independently.

Equipping my class with special interests materials will motivate my students to have fun while they are learning.

Your support can help them overcome their challenges in comprehension, independence, and writing. So, thank you so much for supporting my project!
